Oakville boy, 9, critical after garage-door mishap

OAKVILLE

An innocent bicycle ride almost turned deadly for an eager nine-year-old when the garage door of his family’s home snagged his hood, hoisted him into the air and nearly choked the life out of him.

Halton Regional Police say the boy remains in critical condition following Monday’s terrifying ordeal on Pine Glen Rd., near Dundas St. W. and Third Line.

“It’s just a really unfortunate, freak accident,” Sgt. Chantal Corner said Tuesday. “It’s one of those things that make us all go home and hug our kids a little tighter.”

The sight of the boy’s body dangling from the garage door will forever haunt neighbour Nadia Khan.

“He’s really a nice boy,” she said of her son’s friend.

Khan said the boy came to her house shortly after 7 p.m. Monday to ask her son Shazil, also nine, to come out and play. But her family was having dinner, so her son told his pal to go get his bike and he’d join him in 10 minutes.

Shazil went outside when he finished eating, but he returned home almost immediately looking distraught.

“My son said, ‘(He) is hanging from the garage,’ ” Khan recalled.

She momentarily thought the boys were playing a joke on her, but she knew by the look of panic on her son’s face something was terribly wrong.

Khan looked outside and saw the boy hanging from the opened garage door — his feet about a metre off the ground — and immediately shouted for her husband.
