How to properly measure for a new garage door – A garage door is one of the most functional features of your home.
It serves multiple purposes; for one, it keeps your cars and automobiles safe.
With that, it is a given that you must observe regular and proper maintenance to preserve the life of your garage door.
Absent this, and you may have to look for a professional technician to have a new one installed.
If you are looking to replace your garage door or get a new one for an upgrade, here are some tips on properly measuring for a new garage door.
However, it’s better for a more accurate and precise measurement that you call a garage door repair company to do the work.
Measuring a garage door
When measuring the width of the garage door, make sure that you measure it while the door is opened at the widest point.
You are measuring the distance between the opposite sides of the opening.
If you want a more accurate measurement, take a 2 x 6 inch piece of wood.
Ensure that the inside of the garage door opening measures the same as the wood.
While taking the measurement, it is also vital that you inspect the garage door as well, including the mounting tracks and the rollers.
Note if there are any general irregularities you noticed.
You would also have to measure the height of the garage door.
When measuring the height of the garage door, make sure that you open it at the highest point.
In particular, you need to measure the distance between the floor and top of the door at its most opened angle.
Same with the previous step, make sure that you also note any noticeable irregularities such as an unlevel floor.
In addition to the garage doors’ height and width, you also need to measure the width of the areas beside the openings.
For each side of the garage door, you need 5 inches on each side for the installation of the tracks.
However, if you are planning for a two-door installation, measure the center post.
The measurement should be a minimum of 10” wide.
You also need to measure the area between the top of the garage door opening and the ceiling.
You can also measure the distance between the top of the door or just the nearest and lowest obstruction near the ceiling.
With that, you also need to measure the distance from the garage door opening to the rear of the garage, or if that is not the case, the nearest obstruction.
However, if you have sectional type doors in your home, the backroom requirements might be a little different as you have measure the height of the garage door itself and an additional 18 inches if you have a manual.
For automatic, electrical garage doors, the additional requirement for the backroom measurement is just 4’2 inches.
Some additional steps might be useful when measuring a garage door.
Make sure that you observe the electrical outlet that your garage door opener uses.
If there are any visible jambs, it is also crucial that you note them.
If there are other obstructions, such as pies, ductworks, or lights, to name a few, note them as well, as they may obstruct the operation of the door.
Measuring a coiling roll-up garage door
How to properly measure for a new garage door,
Aside from the steps mentioned above, there is an additional one that you need to do when you are measuring a coiling roll-up garage door.
You also have to measure the side-room clearances on both the left and right sides of the garage door opening.
The measurements of the side-room clearance may vary depending on the specific garage door model.
However, the standards are as follows: for manually lifted doors, a side-room clearance of around 4 to 6 inches on each side.
As for doors operation on chain hoist, the measurement requirement is about 5.25 to 9.5 inches.
And 14 to 18 inches are needed for electrically operated garage doors.
