Read on to find out more about the most essential part of your mechanical door.

Garage Door Spring in a Glance

Normally, when we purchase something, we always check the technical specifications of the item.

That’s because we want to make sure that the item will perform properly and provide us what we truly need.

Today’s technological advances have provided us with an array of options.

So, before you head out to the store, know what type of spring your hardware needs.

Here is the information you need on how to select garage door springs for your mechanical door:

The overhead door spring needs two types of spring.

But, each spring has different functions and works in unison for seamless operation.

    Extension Spring

You will see the extension spring installed on each side of the panel.

This unit has long features, lightweight that runs parallel to the hardware’s track.

When the door panel is prompted open, it releases the tension energy and stores them when it closes.

The extension spring is classified into three which is based on the unit’s bottom part. These are:

    1. Open Looped. This unit does not require tedious steps during the replacement process. However, when the open wire at the end breaks, you have to replace the entire spring.
    2. Double Looped. Not as weak as the open looped but it’s next to the clipped end when it comes to durability. This unit can be easily identified since it has coils at every bottom. The only downside about this spring is when it breaks; it requires technical skills to replace the unit.
    3. Clipped Ends. The most durable among the three classifications, this extension spring also offers the longest service life.

This spring can carry a 200-pound door panel.

However, despite its resilient qualities, this extension spring is quite complex to replace.

    Torsion Spring

The torsion spring is found installed above the topmost part of the hardware panel.

This type of spring will depend on the size, strength, and weight of the garage door.

Mainly, this spring supports the weight of your hardware.

Therefore, some overhead doors may require more than one torsion spring.

There are four types of torsion springs and these are:

    1. Standard. This is the type of extension spring used in most residential overhead doors that can be seen installed above the hardware’s opening
    2. Early-set. Same as the standard torsion spring but the only difference is that it’s installed in the middle of the shaft
    3. Steel rolling-door. This unit is used in every commercial or industrial building.
    4. Torque-master. Considered as the safest type of spring since it is placed inside an enclosed torsion shaft

The Lifting Capacity of Torsion Spring

The torsion spring has a different lifting capacity.

To avoid installing the wrong torsion spring to your hardware, know the color of your unit.

The colors represent the weight of the panel they support.

    • Tan – carries a 100-pound door panel
    • White – carries a 110-pound door panel
    • Green – carries a 120-pound door panel
    • Yellow – carries a 130-pound door panel
    • Blue – carries a 140-pound door panel
    • Red – carries a 150-pound door panel
    • Brown – carries a 160-pound door panel
    • Orange – carries a 170-pound door panel
    • Gold – carries about 180 to 185 pounds door panel
    • Light Blue – carries around 190 pounds door panel

NOTE: The sequencing of the colors will repeat as Tan being the first and Light Blue as the last color.

So, don’t be confused if you will encounter a Tan colored torsion spring that can bear a 200-pound door panel.
